Marrakech to Merzouga by Car: The Complete Road Trip Guide

Everything you need to know before driving to the Sahara Desert

Marrakech to Merzouga by Car: The Complete Road Trip Guide

I’ve done this drive more times than I can count. Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 560 km, and depending on how many stops you make, it takes anywhere from 8 to 10 hours.

It’s one of the best road trips you can do in Morocco — maybe in all of North Africa — but it does require some planning.

Here’s everything you actually need to know.

🛣️ The Route

There are two main ways to get there:

Option A: Via Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley (N10)

Route:
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka Pass → Ouarzazate → Tinghir → Todra Gorge → Errachidia → Merzouga

This is the classic route. You cross the High Atlas through the Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters — the highest road pass in Morocco. The views are insane.

After Ouarzazate, the landscape shifts to desert valleys, kasbahs, and palm groves. Most people stop at Todra Gorge — and they should. It’s worth it.

Option B: Via Midelt and the Ziz Valley (N13)

Route:
Marrakech → Beni Mellal → Midelt → Errachidia → Merzouga

This one is faster and more straightforward. Less dramatic at the start, but the Ziz Valley near Errachidia is stunning.

👉 Best if you want efficiency over scenery.

💡 My recommendation:
Go via Ouarzazate on the way there, and come back via Midelt.

🚙 Which Car Do You Need?

Let me be direct:

👉 You need a 4x4 for the last stretch.

Yes, the road to Merzouga is paved. A normal car can reach the town.

But if you want to:

  • Reach your desert camp

  • Drive on sand

  • Explore Erg Chebbi

Then you need a proper 4x4.

Best options:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser Prado → reliable, powerful, perfect for everything

  • Dacia Duster → budget option, works well (just avoid deep dunes)

📌 Also important:
Most rentals don’t allow non-4x4 vehicles on unpaved roads.

📍 Best Stops Along the Way

Ait Benhaddou (1.5 hours from Marrakech)

UNESCO World Heritage ksar. You’ve seen it in Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and more.
👉 A quick 45-minute walk is enough.

Ouarzazate (4 hours)

Known as the “Gateway to the Desert.”

Perfect place to:

  • Grab lunch

  • Refuel

  • Visit Atlas Studios (if you’re into movies)

Todra Gorge (6.5 hours)

Massive canyon walls rising 300 meters high.

  • Cool even in summer

  • Very photogenic

  • Easy short walk inside

Erfoud (7.5 hours)

Your last real stop before Merzouga.

  • Fuel up here ⛽

  • Optional: check out the fossil market

⛽ Fuel Stations

Here’s the reality:

👉 Between Ouarzazate and Errachidia, fuel stations get rare.

Key places to fill up:

  • Ouarzazate

  • Tinghir

  • Errachidia

  • Erfoud (last reliable one)

💡 Rule I always follow:
Never pass a station with less than half a tank.

🌤️ When to Go

Best time: October → April

  • Warm days

  • Cool nights

  • Clear skies

Avoid summer if you can

Temperatures hit 45–50°C. Not fun.

Winter bonus (Dec–Jan):

  • Amazing stargazing 🌌

  • Beautiful golden dunes

  • Nights can drop to 5°C → bring layers

💡 Tips from Experience

  1. Leave Marrakech early (7 AM)

  2. Download offline maps (signal gets weak)

  3. Bring cash (cards often don’t work in small towns)

  4. Don’t stress about Tichka Pass — it’s safe

  5. Don’t rush — the journey is the experience
